Calcein and manganese experiments for marking the shell of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule): tidal rhythm validation of increments formation ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Lartaud, Franck; De Rafelis, Marc.
This work focuses on investigating the potential of calcein and manganese as growth markers of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) in the bay of Somme (France). Recapture of shells, previously marked using a chemical marking and then bred in natural conditions, was performed in order to determine the shell growth patterns. Calcein marking has shown a fluorescent increment in shells after only 30 min immersion time at 150 mg L-1, but also for shells immersed 3 h at 50 mg L-1. Likewise, manganese shell marking was revealed under cathodoluminescence for shells immersed 1 h at 120 mg L-1 as well as for shells which spent 4 h at 90 mg L-1. A numerical analysis performed on each marked cockles has revealed 23 micro-increments between the mark and the ventral...

Bellamy, Elise; Lefebvre, Alain; Mahe, Kelig; De Rafelis, Marc.
The bay of Somme is the first French field of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) with a production amounting to 3000 tons per year on average. In order to improve the stock management, it is necessary to increase our knowledge of this species. This study is looking at the growth of the common cockle. First, was carried out a morphometric analysis of the two left and right valves, which has revealed a perfect symmetry of the shell and has allowed us to establish strong correlations among the morphometric parameters. Then, a chemical marking study has been realized with calcein and manganese in order to obtain the exact growth. Calcein marking has showed a fluorescent stria only for an half hour immersion time at 150 mg.L-1. Likewise, the manganese marking has...

Distribution of parasites in their second intermediate host, the cockle Cerastoderma edule: community heterogeneity and spatial scale ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, X.; Lanceleur, L..
We studied the spatial heterogeneity of infection of the marine bivalve Cerastoderma edule (cockle) by trematode parasites at 5 different scales in Banc d'Arguin, France. At the km-scale, the communities of trematodes differed among stations in terms of species composition and specific abundance. Infection heterogeneity was likely due to the occurrence of the definitive host and the conditions of transmission (water parameters). At the 100 m scale, trematode species richness was similar among stations, but specific trematode abundances differed. The most significant variable in terms of explaining trematode infection heterogeneity was the presence of the first intermediate host. At the 10 m scale, the distance at which parasite abundance diminished varied...

Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
The main problems involved in making biomass and density estimates of benthic mol1uscs are the choice of a sampling plan, the level of systematic errors and random errors. A stratified random sampling after optimum allocation was used in the case. The benthic molluscs estimates (biomass or density) are highly variable, due to their aggregated distribution. The sampling gear used is a Smith Mc-lntyre grab which introduce a bias in the estimates. Nevertheless, the Macoma baLthica community was predominant in the bay but Cerastoderma edul.e appeared to be the dominant specie.

Effect of trematode parasites on cockle Cerastoderma edule growth and condition index: a transplant experiment ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, X.; Bazairi, H.; Culloty, S..
We quantified the effect of trematode parasites in cockles through a 303 d transplant experiment. Cockles were sampled in 3 different sites on the southwest coast of France characterized by 3 different trematode communities, i.e. Royan (RO): high Meiogymnophallus minutus abundance near cockle heart, South Arguin (SA): high Himasthla interrupta abundance in the mantle margin, and North Arguin (NA): almost free of trematodes. Sampled cockles were individually tagged and placed in different cages at Banc d'Arguin, Arcachon Bay. At the end of the experiment, RO cockles had lost their trematodes, highlighting the fact that trematode lifespan can be short, while SA cockles maintained their trematode load. When cockles were the second intermediate host, there was...

Thebault, Anne.
Detection of an emerging disease is a crucial aspect for animal health. For the french marine mollusc aquaculture the interest is obvious, after three catastrophic epizooties. The methodological approach must be done by three different disciplines : epidemiology, ecology and marine pathology. Those three approachs are complementary in the special context of marine outbreaks. The uncertainty about many criteria and the lack of  proofs feasible for showing the causality link, make the different approachs a necessity. The first step is the study of the three boxes, host, agent, environrnent. This approach, made for studying the cockles of the Croisic's bay could help us to make hypothesis about the possible origins ofmortality, and to a void measurement,...

Poder, M; Auffret, Mathieu; Balouet, G.
This paper is a contribution to the study of the Bonamia ostreae epizooty in french european oyster Ostrea edulis : parasite process (hemocytic parasitosis); experimental contaminations on parks and in tanks. First results of an epidemiological watch conducted in oyster culture sites show in molluks mytilidae, pectinidae, cardiidae, veneridae: the absence of Bonamia ostreae forms; the existence of different types of parasitism or commensalisus of inequal pathological importance and especially a parasite of the Marteilia genus in Tapes sp . digestive epithelium. Additionally, a new example of hemocytosercoma is observed in Cerastoderma edule .

Infection characteristics of Himasthla elongata cercariae in cockles as a function of water current ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, X; Wegeberg, Am; Jensen, Kt; Sauriau, Pg.
Digenean trematodes are widespread parasites of marine fauna. The first intermediate host of Himasthla elongata (Echinostomatidae) is the periwinkle Littorina littorea. The second host is less specific, as it includes Various bivalve species. The definitive host is a waterbird. The free-living cercaria acts to ensure transmission from the first and second intermediate hosts. We examined the impact of water flow (still and running water) and host size (6-8, 8-10, 10-12 mm shell length classes) on the settling success of H. elongata cercariae in the second intermediate host by utilizing the common cockle Cerastoderma edule. Under 2 scenarios (free-stream velocity of 0 and 6 cm s(-1)) more than 90% of the experimental population of cockles (90 individuals per...

Infection of the cockle Cerastoderma edule in the baie des veys (France) by the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia sp. ArchiMer
Comtet, T; Garcia, Celine; Le Coguic, Yvette; Joly, Jean-pierre.
We report the occurrence of the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia sp. in the oocytes of the common cockle Cerastoderma edule in a natural population in France, where high mortalities occurred. Steinhausia sp. appeared primarily as sporocysts containing many small spores, and putative earlier developmental stages were also observed. Both its prevalence and infection intensity were low, and no host defence reaction was recognized, suggesting that Steinhausia sp. had no detrimental effect on C. edule. Its prevalence was higher in cockles lying on the sediment surface, but the significance of this observation could not be explained given the poor knowledge of the Steinhausia life cycle. The present data did not allow specific identification of the parasite,...

Karyotype variation in neoplastic cells associated to severity of disseminated neoplasia in the cockle Cerastoderma edule ArchiMer
Matias, A. M.; Diaz, S.; Teixeira De Sousa, Joana; Villalba, A.; Carballal, M. J.; Leitao, A..
Disseminated neoplasia (DN) is characterized by an abnormal cell proliferation, usually resulting in death of the affected mollusks. In the present study we performed, for the first time, karyotypes of two different stages of DN in the cockle Cerastoderma edule. Analysis of moderate (N2) and high (N3) severity neoplasic metaphases displayed a chromosome number ranging from 57 to 317, instead of the normal diploid number of 38. Cockles with N2 showed a lower percentage of microchromosomes and a higher ploidy than those with N3. The comparison of both cytogenetic profiles contributes to better understand the evolution of DN in cockles.

Guillou, Jean-louis; Tartu, C.
Investigation on the recruitment of Cerastoderma edule was carried out at St-Pol-de-Leon over three years. This approach is intended to disclose in the fluctuations of recruitment the part of variability linked with reproduction and spawning. Stages of sexual maturity are used together with a condition index. The reproductive activity spread out over the most part of the year, ripe individuals being observed even in winter. Main spawning took place in summer and autumn. Seasonal and interannual fluctuations of recruitment are associated with the variations of the condition index. An increase of the reproductive activity could be observed between 1987 and 1989 related with temperature. It is shown that this factor is the main responsible of the variations...

Suivi des coques du Croisic en 1998. Bilan synthétique. ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Marie-jo; Thebault, Anne; Chellet, B.; Ponthoreau, C.; Devulder, G..
